Centipede Firewall
Overview
Centipede Firewall is a commercial branch of pfSense, an open source firewall system based on FreeBSD. Centipede Firewall software is distributed for free on CD with optional support plans available for purchase. The free software is a full featured firewall and comes with an easy install interface. It is our goal to give the customer an easy-to-use and powerful firewall. It is not our goal to give you a CD which requires a support plan to get the system up and running. We also offer Centipede Firewall for sale on state-of-the-art hardware with annual support plans.
Centipede Firewall uses OpenBSD's ported Packet Filter (PF), FreeBSD ALTQ (HFSC) for traffic shaping, and a packaging system for extending functionality even further. Since its 1.0 release, pfSense has seen roughly 150,000 downloads, and is used in production environments around the world. We at Centipede Networks use the Centipede Firewall as both a firewall and load balancer for supporting our home filtering product, which generates around 40 million requests per day to our servers.
Centipede Firewall includes features such as full control via a web interface, an aliasing system for easing management of firewall rules, failover clustering support via CARP, load balancing, integrated VPN support for many popular protocols, traffic and system statistics reporting, and of course the packaging system. The Centipede Firewall is one of the most powerful and versatile firewall systems the market has ever seen.
Many customers ask, "Why are you giving away your software ... what's the catch?". Centipede Networks has a new philosophy for commercial software distribution and support, there is no catch. We would love it if every customer bought a support plan but that is not required. In the future we are going to be releasing packages for Centipede Firewall which will include some free packages and some paid packages. We want to provide you with the best firewall available today. It is our belief that if we provide an outstanding product, the customer will purchase support contracts and additional packages that will in turn provide a revenue stream for one of the most innovative and progressive firewalls on the market today.
